The syllabus covers 8 important Skillsets. There are 7 belt levels in total.
Balance
This is a much underdeveloped skill outside of the Martial Arts but plays an important role in development of good posture and co-ordination. Balance is important to be successful in all sports. Also good balance skills are very important when using Taekwondo kicking techniques for example. your child is starting to participate in activities that require balance, like riding a bicycle. Developing this skill at an early age will help them in many activities and aids good posture development.
Co-ordination
As well as continuing to learn left from right this programme element will help with coordination of arms and body at the same time. This step also covers the 3 body areas for attack and defense. There are several drills that will help with your child’s entire physical coordination and will also help with other sporting activities and posture.
Memory
Being able to effectively use you memory is an important life-skill especially with young children who are in the early stages of their education. Taekwondo requires students to use their memory skills to recall techniques and routines in training. This element will help your child think in a logical manner, make decisions and remember basic routines and sequences. This will be a great help to your child in a classroom environment. a child's brain needs exercise just as much as their body. Memory development is good exercise for your child's brain. Our exercises are constantly helping your child think and make good decisions
Every 11 weeks we work on helping our Tigers obtain their stripes. These are great incentives to help them learn not just necessary core skills such as balancing and the basic strikes, but also memory, and even learning to cross the road safely.
Control
Control is a key life skill and this element will teach your child not only control over body movement and technique but also control over their emotions thus enabling them better to cope with problem handling. Having control means making good decisions. Whether your child is handling a pet or handling a problem, he or she will to learn to make the correct decisions. Control builds confidence
Teamwork
Teamwork and respect for others are vitally important in all aspects of a child’s development. This program Step teaches a child how to work as part of a team to carry out a task and to give praise and support to others. Your child will learn leadership and co-operation skills which will help them make friends and develop confidence and character. Teamwork is greatly encouraged both at School and in their future work place.
Teamwork is necessary for any young child to develop. The more confident your child is willing to work with others, the more he or she will accomplish. Your child will develop character, which will help him or her make new friends and become a better leader in life.
Focus
Learning how to focus helps develop a child’s overall concentration and reaction. They will be able to take in information more easily in the classroom and ignore distractions. They will also learn how to set goals and really focus on a given task. Taekwondo relies on focus to make techniques work effectively.
This skill will help your child's aim, listening skills and reaction skills. They will excel faster in any physical activities. Your child will also become a better listener and more focused student in school.
Awareness
Being alert and ready to respond is the fundamental concept in Taekwondo. As well as being aware of your immediate environment, threats, obstacles, potential dangers and other people etc, you also need to be aware of attack and defense areas of you own body. This Step also covers the important subject of “Stranger Danger”. Step 1 also teaches how to react in different situations and most importantly how to avoid danger.
Discipline
All Steps of the Tan’Gun Tigers programme are carried out in a fun but disciplined environment but this step goes one stage further by learning how to ignore everyday distractions and being encouraged to make the right decisions. This part of the programme will enforce the value of fair play and “doing the right thing”. Our programme uses the Tiger drills to help create the vision that discipline is fun and rewarding. Your child will learn to take pride in doing the right thing. (This stripe is awarded by showing a demonstration of Blackbelt Attitude: Respect to everybody, enthusiasm in class, willingness to help others and to be the best they can be, in class, home and school).
Belt gradings are a part of these classes but these come along roughly every 3 months.

This Tiger just received his memory badge.
